Among the many charms of wine is how it can change its style within the same region, from one vineyard to the next or in the hands of different winemakers. Pinot Noir, in particular, is one of those grapes that is a great expression of terroir. This week's Tasting Highlights features eight outstanding-rated Pinot Noirs from California and Oregon that show range and stylistic nuance across their respective appellations.
In California, for example, Santa Lucia Highlands is a cool climate and high-elevation site within greater Monterey County. The region's proximity to the Monterey Bay brings fog and coastal breezes nearly daily. The two wines from SLH listed here show two regional styles, with Hahn offering a succulent style with savory, red tea and sandalwood through the lengthy finish. Meanwhile, La Crema has a forward and flattering appeal with expressive notes of linzer torte and mulberry preserves.
This lineup also includes Patz & Hall's sleek and fresh Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2022 and Optik’s silky bottling from the famed Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, plus Oregon wines from Bethel Heights, Elk Cove, Lange and Willamette Valley Vineyards.
