This week’s Tasting Highlights puts a spotlight on both quality and diversity from Spain. Bright whites range from minerally bottlings of Albariño and Godello from Spain’s northwestern corner to fragrant versions of Verdejo from Rueda in north-central Spain and Moscatel from high-elevation vineyards, far to the south in the Sierras de Málaga appellation.
Among the reds, the Mencía grape is the signature variety. It produces light- to medium-bodied examples from Valdeorras and Bierzo, appellations near Spain’s northern coastline. For more robust reds, look to Toro and Ribera del Duero, just northwest of Madrid. Each appellation produces wines from a local version of Tempranillo, known as Tinta de Toro and Tinta del País, respectively.
